Abstract

The first symposium of the South African Institute for Computer Scientists and Information Technologists (SAICSIT) was hosted in 1995 by the University of South Africa (UNISA) with the aim of providing a forum for researchers in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Software Engineering and Computer Engineering (as defined in the ACM, AIS and IEEE-CS) to exchange ideas and research results. Since then, the conference has been held annually and is considered to be the premier research conference for IT researchers from within South Africa and neighbouring African countries.

The theme of this year's conference is "A Connected Society", which is important not only because of its relevance in today's modern, highly linked, technological world, but also because of its impact on society, from the resource-rich minority to the resource-poor majority. Social networking, mobile technologies, the ubiquitous Internet, cloud computing, and wireless and wired superhighways, to mention but a few, all contribute to our highly connected society as well as the quality of life of individuals within this society.
