Abstract

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 52nd Association of Computing Machinery Annual Computers and People Research Conference - ACM SIGMIS CPR 2014. In the past 51 years, ACM SIGMIS CPR has engaged the academic and practitioner communities towards understanding issues at the intersection of society, organizations, individuals and information technology (IT). This year's conference is the third, in its long history to take place outside North America. This edition of the conference is the first to be held in Asia, specifically in Singapore. Singapore is known for its nationlevel IT implementation and as a hub for IT service delivery. It is timely, therefore, that we explore - "The Globalization of IT Work"; this year's theme.

The globalization of IT work that began with the "offshoring" of IT work to Asia has now matured and transformed into a globalized phenomenon. The nature of IT work now routinely requires access to centers of knowledge and expertise that are dispersed across the globe. The globalization of IT work has benefited the Asian IT workforce; as it does in Latin America and Africa. But, global and globalized IT work has also raised a number of challenges and issues. IT professionals now face problems of collaboration, coordination, control, and knowledge transfer due to the geographical and cultural distances between them.

Towards this end, the papers and panels within this proceedings address topics ranging from the development of cultural competencies to the development of an IT workforce that meets the current work demands. This edition of the proceedings also includes studies in enduring topics such as stress and IT education. We hope the papers in these proceedings serve as a valuable reference for computer and people researchers and practitioners in the coming years.
