IHC

In 2018 the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems – IHC – is completing 20 years since its first edition in 1998, in Maringá, PR. Since then the event has grown, supported the HCI community in Brazil and consolidated itself as the leading national HCI conference in Brazil, that brings together researchers, practitioners, educators, and students for discussing state-of-the-art works in both academia and practice. It encourages and fosters collaboration across groups, disciplines, and geographical regions. IHC is promoted by the Brazilian Computer Society (Sociedade Brasileira de Computação – SBC), through its Special Committee on HCI (CEIHC).

Since its 1st edition, IHC has been organized in different cities, throughout the five regions of Brazil. This year, the 17th edition of IHC (as it became biennial for a couple of years to alternate with the Latin American Conference on Human-Computer Interaction - CLIHC) is being organized for the first time in Belém, north of Brazil. Motivated by the very rich culture of the north of Brazil, the theme of IHC2018 is ?Interaction, Culture, and Creativity?, which highlights the influence and importance of cultural issues in the design of computer systems, as well as the need to be creative and innovative in designing new forms of interaction, design, and system evaluations.

IHC 2018 program counts with categories that are traditional within the events, such as full papers, short papers, student competition – evaluation, HCI in practice, virtual posters and demos, tutorials, workshops, as well as the Workshop on HCI Education (WEIHC) and the Workshop of Theses and Dissertations in HCI (WTD-IHC). In 2018, we have also introduced the International Paper presentation category in which Brazilian researchers who have presented relevant HCI work in international conferences and journals, have the opportunity to present it to the community. This year, IHC will host the Forum of Collaborative Systems and HCI with the goal to better integrate the Brazilian CSCW and HCI communities. Finally, IHC will count with 3 keynotes speakers – namely, Victoria Bellotti (Lyft), Kristina Höök (KTH), and Virgílio Almeida (Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University/UFMG); as well as a panel on Social Responsibility and Ethics: A 20 year Retrospective, in which, besides our invited keynote speakers, will participate two senior Brazilian HCI researchers – Clarisse S. de Souza (PUC-Rio) and Maria Cecília C. Baranauskas (UNICAMP).

These proceedings present the full and short papers selected for IHC 2018.This year we had 166 valid submissions for full papers, and 42 were accepted (25.3% acceptance rate), and 41 short paper submissions and 12 were accepted (29.2%). The research described in the papers has covered a broad range of topics, including accessibility, social aspects, collaborative systems, new interaction styles and frontiers, HCI methods, UX, digital legacy and empathy to cite a few. The submissions accepted for the other categories will be available in the Extended Proceedings for IHC 2018 that will be published in the SBC digital library.

Finally, we would like to thank all the volunteers that made the event possible: the technical committee who worked with us to create an exciting program for the conference; the 120 members of the Technical Program Committee, as well as the other 43 members of our PhD Students Review Committee and all the additional reviewers for all the different tracks, as well as the volunteers that supported the organization of the event.
