One of the reasons we continue to find the CSCW conference so intellectually satisfying is the convergence of disciplines and outlooks it embodies. The conference brings together those who study and design group and organizational and community practices with those who study and design technologies intended to support group and organizational and community practices. The CSCW 2002 papers continue that tradition, with contributions from the behavioral, technical and design disciplines in a broad range of application areas.Members of the papers committee, both the 25 associate chairs and the over 100 reviewers, deserve tremendous thanks for the hours that they donated to evaluating submissions and shaping the papers portion of the technical program. Under tight time constraints, each of the 193 submissions was evaluated by at least three reviewers and one associate chair. All told, they wrote over 775 evaluations, attempting to judge whether submissions had sufficient quality and breadth to warrant presentation to the diverse CSCW audience, and to provide helpful comments to the authors. From the 193 papers submitted for CSCW 2002, we accepted 39. The papers are drawn from an international community of researchers and represent a mix of technical and social and design aspects of the field. The embrace a range of methodologies and technical approaches and provide a snapshot the diverse set of activities of the international CSCW community.
