Abstract

2004 is the eighth consecutive year in which this community, which bridges artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction, has organized the ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI). This is the first year that this conference is taking place outside the U.S., and also the first time we are organizing the meeting jointly with another conference, the International Conference on Computer-Aided Design of User Interfaces (CADUI). Although this foreword is being written before the conference actually happens, we can already say with some assurance that both new aspects of this year's event are a success.CADUI is a triennial conference that focuses on the development of tools, environments and middleware for automating the design of user interfaces, whether they involve artificial intelligence or not. Historically, there has been a lot of overlap between the authors and reviewers of IUI and CADUI papers. In January 2004, these two communities will come together to the seaside Hotel Tivoli Ocean Park on the beautiful island of Madeira (Portugal) to learn, collaborate and socialize together. This joint event will feature two separately reviewed, parallel tracks presenting full-length IUI and CADUI technical papers, with jointly organized invited talks, poster presentation of short papers, workshops, tutorials, demonstrations and social event.Despite the "competition" from CADUI, IUI received a record number of 95 long paper submissions this year (up from 80 last year). The total of IUI long paper and joint IUI-CADUI short paper submissions, 140, was also up from 134 last year. Submissions were received from 27 different countries. Here are the overall acceptance statistics:

  • 95 Long Papers submitted

  • 27 accepted as long papers (28%)

  • 17 accepted as short papers (18%)

  • 45 Short Papers submitted

  • 28 accepted (62%)

  • 11 Demonstrations submitted

  • 10 accepted (91%)

.All of these accepted submissions appear in this volume. The 29 full-length CADUI papers presented at the conference will appear as a hardcover book published by Kluwer Academic Publishers, titled "Computer-Aided Design of User Interfaces IV", and edited by Robert Jacob, Quentin Limbourg, and Jean Vanderdonckt. In addition to the 10 accepted demonstrations listed above, most of the 45 (28+17) accepted short paper posters will also be accompanied by live demonstrations. As another innovation this year, we have provided a "Late-Breaking Demos" track, which is still open at the time of this writing. All in all, we expect over 60 demonstrations, which will make for a very lively mix on Thursday evening with the posters, food and drink. The following four IUI-CADUI tutorials will take place on Tuesday, January 13, 2004:

  • Scenario-based Design of User Interfaces: Theory from AI and Application in HCI

  • Programming by Example Henry Lieberman

  • Design of Intelligent User Interfaces for Ubiquitous Computing Anxo Cereijo Roibás, Lucia Terrenghi, Stefania Marcoli

  • Community Support, Work Processes, and Multiple User Interfaces: Model-based Design of Highly Interactive Work Communities Chris Stary, Simone Stoiber

.Please refer to the table of contents for short pre-event summaries of the four IUI-CADUI workshops also taking place on Tuesday, and for information about our two invited speakers, Alan Kay and Sid Fels.
