Über dieses Buch

This book is the first to cover all aspects of using ammonia for energy - from production to last use. The book explains the fundamentals and basic concepts about hydrogen and ammonia before examining their production methods. Then it covers ammonia production and storage techniques. Furthermore, the book contains case studies that demonstrate the use of ammonia technology. Ammonia energy systems are explained, and the technologies and methods used with them are explained with illustrative examples. Finally, the book lays out future directions in the development of ammonia energy systems. It is expected that the book will be of interest to all researchers and professionals interested in new energy sources.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Ammonia
Abstract
The need for fossil fuels has steadily increased over the past many decades due to human-made activities which have resulted in numerous environmental issues, including climate change and pollution. Thus, the search for alternative fuels is of utmost importance today. In this chapter, ammonia is proposed as an alternative energy solution to fossil fuels. Sectoral utilization of ammonia is also discussed.
Ibrahim Dincer, Dogan Erdemir, Muhammed Iberia Aydin, Huseyin Karasu, Greg Vezina
Chapter 2. Ammonia Production
Abstract
In this chapter, production pathways for ammonia are covered. Conventional production methods and cleaner technologies are explained. Also, the clean production technologies required for the production of ammonia are investigated. The cost and efficiency assessments are carried out for various case studies.
Ibrahim Dincer, Dogan Erdemir, Muhammed Iberia Aydin, Huseyin Karasu, Greg Vezina
Chapter 3. Ammonia and Alternative Fuels
Abstract
In this chapter, the environmental impacts of ammonia and other fuels are investigated through various studies, including life cycle assessment studies and discussed comparatively. It further provides some general information regarding life cycle assessment and its steps for various methods. Moreover, the cradle-to-grave type studies of ammonia and other fuels are carried out comparatively, and various case studies are performed and presented with some compelling results.
Ibrahim Dincer, Dogan Erdemir, Muhammed Iberia Aydin, Huseyin Karasu, Greg Vezina
Chapter 4. Utilization of Ammonia and Ammonia Blends in Power Generators
Abstract
This chapter deals with conversion opportunities of a traditional gasoline-powered generator into an ammonia-fueled one. There are many experimental tests presented and discussed accordingly. Also, the power generator performance and emission values are investigated under various operating conditions and discussed comparatively. In addition testing ammonia alone, gasoline, propane, ethanol, methanol and hydrogen are blended with ammonia for testing under various conditions. Some preheating options for both ammonia and air are also considered for investigation. The experimental data and findings are further presented and discussed.
Ibrahim Dincer, Dogan Erdemir, Muhammed Iberia Aydin, Huseyin Karasu, Greg Vezina
Chapter 5. Conclusions
Abstract
Ammonia appears to be one of the game-changer options for sustainable energy systems in the near future. It is expected that ammonia will largely be deployed in various sectors as a fuel, refrigerant, agent, working fluid, energy storage medium and feedstock. This chapter aims to discuss some key observations, main points, challenges and opportunities, and future directions to provide some guidance to the readers.
