According to Toyota, it has developed a world-first heat-resistant magnet requiring fewer rare earths than before. The new magnet requires no terbium or dysprosium, two metals that are scarce, expensive and mined in geopolitically dangerous regions. The Japanese carmaker has also been able to reduce the amount of neodymium, replacing almost half the amount conventionally required with a pair of less costly rare earth alternatives: lanthanum and cerium. The chosen ratio of materials is said to still provide similar heat resistance and coercivity. The resource-conserving component is likely to be used in motors for electric steering assistance in the first half of the next decade, then deployed in electric-vehicle motors from around 2028.
