Über dieses Buch

Digital transformation will affect every company or organization sooner or later, regardless of the industry, country, or type of organization. In recent years, this impact has become disruptive, and there is an increasing need for companies to innovate their business models while using various emerging technologies.

The key goals of this book are twofold. The first goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of digital transformation in business using various bibliometric indicators, while the second goal is to propose a synthesis of the potential directions and opportunities for future research agenda related to this field of research. The bibliometric analysis of the current state of knowledge published in the field of digital transformation in business over the last 20 years reveals the existence of four major thematic clusters: (1) the digital transformation process, (2) digital technologies, (3) the digital economy, and (4) digital disruption.

Based on the content analysis of the most important articles that belonged to each cluster of topics, the book outlines several directions for future research. This makes it a useful resource for researchers interested in the field of digital transformation in business.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction to the Bibliometric Analysis of Digital Transformation in Business
Abstract
This chapter provides the arguments that justify the need to develop a comprehensive assessment of the body of knowledge related to digital transformation in business, while significant insights based on bibliometric techniques are depicted in the most influential journals, authors, and research articles, and the key emerging trends in this research field. Thus, the intellectual structure of knowledge related to digital transformation in business is intended to be mapped and the most popular research topics and key directions for future research are identified.

Chapter 2. Bibliometrics Research Methodology
Abstract
This chapter provides the main coordinates of the bibliometrics research methodology that has been used, including data sources and search protocol. Thus, consistent with recent research trends in bibliometric analysis (Caputo et al., J Bus Res 123: 489–501, 2021; Donthu et al., J Bus Res 133: 285–296, 2021; Wang et al., J Bus Res 136: 543–557, 2021; Dabic et al., Small Bus Econ 55: 705–725, 2020; Ferreira, J Bus Res 85: 348–357, 2018), several statistical indicators and bibliometric analyses have been applied to evaluate the development of this field and reveal the knowledge structure of research related to digital transformation in business.

Chapter 3. Bibliometrics Performance Analysis
Abstract
In this chapter, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications related to digital transformation in business is conducted to provide detailed insights into the evolution of the scientific research field. Thus, the performance analysis was employed to provide a comprehensive overview of the development and distribution in the field of digital transformation in business from four statistical analysis perspectives: the number of publications, category of publications, number of citations, and detailed information regarding highly cited publications.

Chapter 4. Science Mapping Analysis
Abstract
This chapter presents the science mapping analysis that highlights the structural and dynamic organization of knowledge in the field of research under investigation (Iwami et al., Scientometrics 122:3–21, 2020)). The results of this analysis provide a comprehensive and comparative picture of the past, present, and future of the research field related to digital transformation in business. In developing the science mapping analysis, the innovative comparative approach to bibliometrics proposed by Caputo et al. (J Bus Res., 123:489–501, 2021) was adopted. This approach proposes an integration into a comparative analysis of the results of various bibliometric indicators, namely citation analysis, co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling, and the co-occurrence of keywords.

Chapter 5. Content Analysis of Articles Included in the Bibliometric Analysis of Digital Transformation in Business
Abstract
From the observation of the bibliometric results of keyword analysis obtained with the bibliometric tools employed and from the content analysis of the most relevant articles from each thematic cluster of high-frequency keywords, this chapter identifies four dominant macro-clusters in the research field under investigation. These clusters are (1) digital transformation processes, (2) digital technologies, (3) the digital economy, and (4) digital disruption. Thematic clusters connecting articles in each major cluster were identified, and from content analysis of the most prestigious articles included in each thematic cluster, subthemes were produced within their respective topics. Subsequently, the content analysis of these articles helped us identify several directions for future research.

Chapter 6. Agenda for Future Research and Conclusions
Abstract
This final chapter presents a summary of future research guidelines that could be used by researchers interested in the development of this field related to digital transformation in business. Also, the main conclusions and implications of this bibliometric study are presented in this concluding chapter.
