Abstract

Nanosized graphene oxide (GO) with multiple oxygen-containing groups was prepared as a leather tanning agent. Leather tanned with 0.4 % GO can meet the shrinkage temperature (T s) and mechanical properties required for the commercial leather products. The GO nano-tanning effluent had much lower pollution indexes, such as total nitrogen, total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, protein, oil, and salts, than the control chrome tanning agent. Our results indicate that the GO nano-tanning agent can replace chrome tanning agents to make leather for eliminating chrome pollution and achieving clean leather tanning.
