Über dieses Buch

Attila Jaeger develops an application which notifies a vehicle’s driver of upcoming road weather dangers. This application maps the information evaluated by in-vehicle sensors in order to draw conclusions on the current weather condition. Comprehensive data basis is gained by sharing information with other vehicles using Car-to-X communication. In order to prove usability of the presented approaches, the developed application and selected concepts are implemented and deployed within the context of large scale Car-to-X field operational trials simTD and DRIVE C2X. Car-to-X communication is considered as the next major step towards a significant increase in road safety and traffic efficiency.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
Car-to-X communication is considered as the next major step towards a significant increase of road safety and traffic efficiency. For this purpose, vehicles connect to each other by building up a decentralized wireless ad-hoc network in order to jointly facilitate a various set of advanced and novel cooperative applications.
Attila Jaeger
Chapter 2. Car-to-X Communication
Abstract
Modern vehicles carry a large number of highly sophisticated sensors to provide a various set of comfort and active safety technologies. Hence, not restricted to upper class vehicles, there are, e. g., radar or lidar sensors to enable Active Cruse Control or Active Braking, one or even multiple cameras for Road Sign Assistance, Pedestrian Recognition, or Lane Keeping Assistance, as well as sonar sensors for Blind Spot Warning or Parking Assistance.
Attila Jaeger
Chapter 3. Weather Hazard Detection
Abstract
Modern vehicles contain a multitude of sensors. Several of them, e. g., outside temperature, rain intensity, or brightness probes, are suitable for detecting the current weather condition. These sensors may be further complemented by observing driver’s actions, e. g., activation of low beam lights, selected level of front shield wipers, or state of rear fog light. All this information is observed and combined together to detect hazardous weather situations by means of the Weather Hazard Warning application within vehicles.
Attila Jaeger
Chapter 4. Situation Maintenance
Abstract
As detailed, within Car-to-X communication each vehicle may detect and report dangerous situations. In Section A.1, some possible attacks on C2X use-cases are detailed. Consequently, multiple approaches to verify the trustworthiness of a message have to be applied upon message reception.
Attila Jaeger
Chapter 5. Driver Notification
Abstract
The final objective of a road safety related Car-to-X application is to present a notification to the driver of a vehicle, if an event may present a threat to driving safety. This way, the driver is aware of the potential dangerous situation and may adapt the driving behavior, such that possible harm can be avoided. The use-case of the weather Hazard Warning is intended just this way.
Attila Jaeger
Chapter 6. Reference Implementations
Abstract
Within this chapter realizations of concepts and components presented in previous chapters are detailed and discussed. This includes an overall C2X system architecture and an implementation and integration of the Mobility Data Verification component. Finally, two field operational trial implementations of the Weather Hazard Warning application and their integration into the respective C2X system architectures are detailed.
Attila Jaeger
Chapter 7. Evaluation Results
Abstract
In this chapter approaches, modules, and components as detailed in previous chapters are evaluated. Therefore, measurement data obtained within driving simulation, individual tests with especially equipped and adapted vehicles, and large scale field operational trials are consulted.
Attila Jaeger
Chapter 8. Summary and Conclusion
Abstract
An overall concept of a road weather related application for Car-to-X communication was presented within this thesis. Thereby, the underlying C2X system architecture, vehicle and infrastructure stations, utilized communication frequencies, and C2X messages are introduced and communication concepts, such as message forwarding and pseudonym changes, were detailed.
