Towards wearable aging in place devices

ABSTRACT

This paper summarizes the author's current doctoral work on investigating how technologies can mitigate the stress of caregivers and help older adults successfully age in place. There has been much success and growth in the creation of aging in place technologies. However, few of these technologies focus on the needs and challenges of low socioeconomic status (SES) rural- and urban-dwelling older adults, and fewer, if any, explore the domain of wearable devices. Findings from in situ observations and interviews conducted with low SES rural- and urban-dwelling older adults are presented. These findings are then use to provide insight into the potential development of wearable aging in place devices.
