Abstract

In the coming decades, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies will continue to fundamentally transform civilization. The powerful new technologies that are revolutionizing society will have a big ethical effect on how they both improve and interfere with human life. Because AI is the externalization of human intelligence, it offers us everything that mankind already is—both good and bad—in enhanced form. The stakes are high. We must carefully evaluate how to effect this transition at this critical juncture in history lest we run the risk of fostering the more sinister, rather than the more charitable, sides of our nature.
