A New Congestion Control Algorithm for SCTP

Abstract

Stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) is a transport layer protocol which inherits features of TCP and UDP. SCTP congestion control works in the same way as the other congestion control algorithms. In a wired environment, the primary cause of packet drop is congestion, but in the wireless environment, transmission impairments of the channel can also lead to packet drops. The current congestion control module of SCTP cannot discriminate between congestion loss and transmission loss. Hence, in both cases, the sender will reduce the traffic rate. This paper suggests a new congestion control algorithm for SCTP, which eliminates the unnecessary speed throttling due to transmission loss. Our idea is to modify the bandwidth estimation using SCTP SACK. We perform extensive simulations to show that the proposed SCTP congestion control algorithm outperforms the basic SCTP congestion control algorithm.
