A performance study on asphalt concrete mixes with different waste materials as modifiers in pavement application

Abstract

In this study, the physical properties of modified asphalt binders and performance of asphalt mixes after the addition of different modifiers such as CR (crumb rubber) derived from different automobile waste tyres and LDPE (low-density polyethylene) were investigated. The wheel tracker test was carried out up to 5000 wheel passes for each specimen and at a temperature of 60 °C to determine the rut depth for unmodified and modified asphalt mixtures. For 5000 wheel passes, the rut depth observed in specimens modified with heavy automobile tyres are 13.36%, 19% and 38.11% lower than that compared to specimens modified with medium, light automobile tyres and unmodified specimen, respectively. After 5000 wheel passes, the rut depth for LDPE-modified asphalt specimen was 30% and 56.54%, respectively, lower than that of heavy automobile modified and unmodified mixture. Also, heavy vehicle tyre-modified mixture shows better results among all crumb rubber modified asphalt mixtures at 9% dosage. But, LDPE-modified mixture at 3% dosage is superior among the entire asphalt modifiers used in the study considering the Marshall stability, tensile strength and wheel tracker test results. Apart from the experimental investigation, the significance of test results were obtained with the help of ANOVA.
