Abstract

This paper proposes a methodological framework to support the design of educational games based on a semantic frame analysis. Starting from a Frame Semantics point of view, the authors provide a deepen analysis of game mechanics definitions using the key concept of verb. To demonstrate the advantages of the proposed model an example is reported to illustrate how we can explicit the game mechanics used in a management/construction game by means of FrameNet and WordNet ontologies.

Footnotes
1
The FrameNet database (https://framenet.icsi.berkeley.edu/fndrupal/), based on the theory of FS, arises from The Berkeley FrameNet project. Starting from examples of use of words in actual contexts it aims to build a lexical database of English human- and machine readable.

2
Wordnet is a lexical database of English. Lexical elements (verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs) are organized in different groups (synset) expressing different concepts. These groups are mutually linked through lexical and semantic relations. WordNet, therefore, can be referred to as a large semantic network of words [16].
