Abstract

Arthur Goldwag, the author of The New Hate: A History of Fear and Loathing on the Populist Right, examines the connections between Austrian School economics and the American far right. These mostly run through Ludwig von Mises rather than Hayek (whom paleoconservatives regard as a ‘moderate social democrat’), and were crystalized in the Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama, which was founded in 1982 by Llewellyn Rockwell, Murray N. Rothbard, Henry Hazlitt, and Ron Paul. Rothbard explicitly rejected what he called the ‘Hayek model’ of trickle-down influence-molding and began a project of ‘Outreach to the Rednecks,’ specifically the white supremacist David Duke. Rothbard’s anti-tax, anti-government, pro-white, pro-police, and ‘America First’ agenda anticipated many of the themes and methods of Donald Trump’s 2016 primary and presidential campaigns.
