About this book

This state-of-the-art book deals with advanced spatial modulation (ASM), which are a special class of recent Multiple-Input Multiple-Output MIMO techniques, for various applications like radio frequency (RF) based body area network (BAN) communication, free-space optical (FSO) communication, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) and hybrid FSO/RF communication. The performance analysis of such systems is achieved in terms of certain performance metrics and compared with other techniques available in the literature. Such SM based schemes can find its application in advanced 5G and 6G communications. The diagrams of the system models of the different schemes along with tables and examples will help readers get a clear understanding of this approach. This book elucidates required derivations, examples, and links various concepts related to this field so that readers can gain comprehensive knowledge. Pseudo codes or algorithms or MATLAB/MATHEMATICA programs are also provided so that readers can easily implement the concepts which they learn. This volume will be useful for students, researchers, and industry alike.

Table of Contents

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
This chapter deals with the basic introduction to the concept of spatial modulation and advanced spatial modulation. The chapter also lists out the various forms of communication to which such spatial modulation schemes can be applied. Performance metrics are also discussed which would be used for analyzing the systems in the subsequent chapters.

Chapter 2. Channel Model
Abstract
In this chapter, the channel models required for various forms of communication are described along with justification of the particular model being used for the particular application. The probability density functions (PDF) and cumulative distribution functions (CDF) of the various channels are also derived which will be used in the subsequent chapters for performance analysis.
Anirban Bhowal, Rakhesh Singh Kshetrimayum
Chapter 3. Advanced Spatial Modulation for Body Area Network Based Communication
Abstract
In this chapter, different types of spatial modulation schemes for BAN communication are analyzed for sporting activities like running and cycling. First, we will give a brief insight into the single-input single-output (SISO) scenario of BAN communication and then extend our analysis to advanced spatial modulation techniques in BAN communication. It is also proved through results that cycling performs better than running. Another pertinent observation is that SMBM performs better than ESM.

Chapter 4. Advanced Spatial Modulation for FSO Communication
Abstract
In this chapter, various advanced spatial modulation (ASM) schemes are investigated for FSO communication. In Chap. 1, we have studied the basics of OSM and PLNC techniques. In the subsequent sections, we are going to utilize OSM along with PLNC for bidirectional FSO relay based networks. Then more advanced schemes like transmit laser selection (TLS), hybrid TLS, optical generalized spatial modulation (OGSM), optical enhanced spatial modulation (OESM) and optical improved quadrature spatial modulation (OIQSM) are proposed for FSO communication, and the performance analysis is done over G-G channels. It is shown that such ASM techniques can perform better than OSM for FSO communication.

Chapter 5. Advanced Spatial Modulation for Underwater Optical Wireless Communication
Abstract
In this chapter, ASM schemes for UOWC systems are discussed. UOWC SISO systems with unidirectional and bidirectional relays are first explored. Then, ASM techniques like OIQSM, TLS and TLS-OSM are discussed for UOWC cooperative systems to show the benefit of ASM techniques over the conventional SISO case. Performance analysis of such ASM based UOWC systems is carried out in terms of outage probability and BER. It is shown through results that OIQSM and TLS-OSM can perform better than OSM and SISO techniques.

Chapter 6. Advanced Spatial Modulation for Hybrid FSO/RF Communication
Abstract
In this chapter, ASM techniques for hybrid FSO/RF cooperative systems with decode-and-forward (DF) relay are discussed. Such systems can be used for future generation cellular communication networks. ASM techniques like HSM, TSS and TSS-HSM are discussed and performance analysis in terms of cost, power consumption and outage probability is carried out. It is shown that TSS-HSM can give the best results.

Chapter 7. Future Research Scopes
Abstract
In this chapter, we will study the future uses of ASM in advanced communication networks like quantum communication, ambient backscattering communication and reconfigurable intelligent surface based communication. ASM in such networks can be implemented in 6G communication which requires multiple devices to communicate at very high data rates within a limited geographical area at a lower cost and limited power constraints. A brief summary of the various technologies along with the implementation of ASM techniques are presented in the subsequent sections.
