Development of the ToUsE toolbox to foster the usability of eHealth systems

About this book

The integration of usability evaluations into iterative software development processes is becoming increasingly relevant, as gathering feedback from prospective users is crucial to improving the usability of eHealth systems. Traditional approaches to eHealth usability evaluation, however, are difficult to reconcile with the iterative software development process, which is why there is an increasing need for agile usability evaluation. Despite the existence of approaches to agile usability evaluation, it is unclear whether they are suitable to rapidly evaluate patient-centered eHealth systems being iteratively developed in health care applicable, for prospective users such as elderly persons suffering from age-related declines. This research includes an innovative and comprehensive toolbox called ToUsE, toolbox for eHealth usability evaluation, which consists of more than 40 rapidly deployable and potentially useful eHealth usability evaluation methods developed by the author. The ToUsEtoolbox is intended for use by software developers, medical informaticians, usability experts, or medical professionals who aim at performing an eHealth usability evaluation. The book provides detailed descriptions of all the eHealth usability evaluation methods included in ToUsE.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
This book examines how an agile usability evaluation for patient-centered eHealth inventions can be realized to foster usability evaluations in health care that are easy to implement and rapid to perform. This section provides background information on evaluating the usability of eHealth inventions, taking into account the iterative approach of software development, which is characterized by short iterations designed to optimize a part of a software. Traditional concepts of usability evaluation, such as user-based and expert-based usability evaluation methods, which are difficult to reconcile with the iterative approach to agile software development, are presented.

Chapter 2. Method
Abstract
The research design of triangulation combined an iterative validation of eHealth usability evaluation methods with a case study-designed, explorative study. This study primarily collected qualitative data from human-computer interaction specialists and participants gained in the exploratory case study. In addition to the primarily qualitative research methods used, a quantitative procedure of frequency rating was chosen to strengthen the accuracy of the results. In the course of the selected research design, all the identified eHealth usability evaluation methods were formalized for evaluating eHealth usability. This section presents the research design of this work in relation to the research questions.

Chapter 3. Results
Abstract
Overall, 43 eHealth usability evaluation methods were prioritized into ten recommended eHealth usability evaluation methods, 22 potentially useful eHealth usability evaluation methods, and 11 not recommended eHealth usability evaluation methods. Based on these findings, a toolbox called ToUsE (“Toolbox for eHealth Usability Evaluations”) was developed that comprises all 43 identified eHealth usability evaluation methods. The results of the exploratory case study showed that not all established eHealth usability evaluation methods are suitable for elderly users. Finally, 24 recommendations were developed on how to address challenges prior to, during, and after carrying out an eHealth usability evaluation.

Chapter 4. Discussion
Abstract
The main research question was: Which usability evaluation approaches are appropriate and deployable to rapidly evaluate patient-centered eHealth inventions being iteratively developed in health care, and is it feasible to conduct an easily applicable eHealth usability evaluation as well as counter and tackle challenges that might arise during the agile eHealth usability evaluation with elderly users? The results of the triangulation study showed that the implementation of an agile, easily applicable, and useful eHealth usability evaluation with prospective users such as elderly patients proved to be feasible. Overall, 43 eHealth usability evaluation methods were identified as suitable for agile, easily applicable, and useful eHealth usability evaluations.

Chapter 5. Conclusion
Abstract
The findings of this book facilitate the employment of agile eHealth usability evaluations as a step towards universal usability of eHealth inventions. These findings regarding prioritized eHealth usability evaluation methods are pertinent to patient-centered eHealth systems as such, which contribute to meaningful improvements to the usability of eHealth interventions and thus enable accessible health care for the aging population. The ToUsE toolbox provides a comprehensive outline of rapidly deployable and potentially useful eHealth usability evaluation methods for all prospective user groups of eHealth usability evaluations.
