Abstract

This paper describes the design and implementation of a crowdsourced animal tracking service. Tracking or obtaining the location of animals can be accomplished using two approaches: active location determination and observing. Considering the challenges associated with equipping animals in the wild with tracking hardware, we introduce an open collaborative interface that allows its users to share the locations of wild animals in the Etosha National Park in Namibia. The animal tracking system provides an interface, which allows users to create sightings of animal using their smartphone, upload them to a server and access other people’s sightings. The paper documents the results of a 5-day coding week held in Namibia as well as the work carried out at HTW Berlin and NUST Namibia afterwards.
