Abstract

The BEM is ideally suited for applications in geomechanics because it can handle infinite domain problems without truncation. This chapter shows how the theory outlined so far can be applied to practical problems, in this case the simulation of underground excavations.

NATM stands for New Austrian Tunnelling Method, which is actually quite old. In this excavation method the installation of ground support is delayed to allow deformation with the aim that a ground arch develops. In other sense, the ground surrounding the tunnel is asked to help support it.
