Artificial intelligence as “theoretical psychology”: Christopher Longuet-Higgins’ contribution to cognitive science

In the complex field of heterogeneous disciplines known as “cognitive sciences”, Christopher Longuet-Higgins is a prominent figure not only by virtue of his pathbreaking work on artificial intelligence and its contribution to the understanding of cognitive processes involved in music perception, language, vision and memory, but in particular for having coined the general term for the disciplines involved in this field, i.e. the term “cognitive science” (Longuet-Higgins 1973, 1987). In recognition of these facts, we wish to dedicate this editorial to the memory of this outstanding scientist, who died in March 2004 at the age of 81. We will first give a brief sketch of the epistemological perspective in which he placed his scientific research, and then briefly focus on one particular topic of this research, namely the cognitive processes involved in the perception of music—an emergent topic still somewhat neglected in contemporary cognitive science. …
