BorgWarner has developed a sophisticated simulation environment, the xEV Vehicle Simulation Framework, to optimize battery sizes for commercial electric vehicles. This framework integrates Matlab Simulink and GT Suite to assess efficiency, energy consumption, performance, and thermal behavior. The tool considers various input parameters such as battery size, payload, drive cycles, and regional influences to calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). A use case scenario demonstrates the tool's effectiveness, showing that a 588-kWh battery is the most cost-effective solution for a specific vehicle and driving profile. The study highlights the importance of precise use case definition and the impact of charging power on driving time and battery health. This comprehensive approach enables fleet owners to make informed decisions about electric vehicle design and operation.
