Automotive Cells Company, founded by PSA and Total, will develop high-performance batteries for the automotive industry. Series production is due to start in two gigafactories from 2023.

The PSA Group, Opel, Total and Saft have signed an agreement founding the Automotive Cells Company (ACC) joint venture. The aim of the consortium is to develop and manufacture high-performance batteries for the automotive industry. The research and development centre in Bordeaux and the pilot site in Nersac (France) have already begun developing the lithium-ion batteries.

The batteries are due to enter series production in two gigafactories in Douvrin (France) and Kaiserslautern (Germany) in 2023. The plan is to achieve an initial capacity of 8 GW/h and a cumulative capacity of 48 GW/h at both sites by 2030. This corresponds to one million electric vehicles produced per year. The project has received 1.3 billion euros in funding from the French and German authorities.
