Many years ago, worrying about which A-levels to pursue, a wise French teacher strongly advised me to pursue further study in modern languages, for which I had a modest aptitude, and to zealously avoid politics, for which I harboured a passion. Politics, she cautioned, was divisive, disappointing, and futile, contributing nothing positive or worthwhile to our brief time on the planet. Although I foolishly ignored the advice, her sentiments, which were far from unusual in the 1980s, are perhaps now more widely shared than ever. Like organised religion, politics remains a reliably contentious subject best avoided in polite company. …
