Surface engineering is an emerging discipline in technologies leading to products such as electronic packages, magnetic recording media, optical devices and tribological protection of mechanical components. The fruitful use of thin coatings in these applications require an accurate characterisation of mechanical properties of these this layers after deposition, a process which can alter their characteristics with respect to the original bulk state. Elastic moduli, yield strength, fracture energy and interfacial adhesion play a crucial role on the correct functioning and longterm performance of coatings, avoiding cracking or delamination from the substrate.
