Abstract

The region we now call the Asia-Pacific is a modern construct. When Canada first engaged in the region, it was known as the Far East. In the post-World War II period, the Far East terminology gave way to just Asia and, then, the Asia-Pacific with the advent of APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation) in 1989.
