Abstract

Kampala in the 21st century is the showcase of Uganda’s economic, political and social transformation following the economic decay and civil war of the 1970s and 1980s. A capital city that reflects the country’s diversity, it is also the site of the historic Buganda Kingdom and its traditions, including agriculture. This and other socio-economic factors have contributed to agriculture being a visible part of the city’s life.

There is inconsistency in the data from our two samples. The farming household survey indicates a ratio of crop: livestock keepers of around 2:1 in urban and 1:1 in peri-urban case study areas, while our listing survey gives ratios of around 2:1 or less in urban and 2:1 or more in peri-urban case study areas measured. This indicates the high variability of urban farming patterns since the samples are not from exactly the same areas. The farming household survey drew farmers from across the whole parish, based on random sampling from leaders’ lists. The listing survey counted every farmer in selected zones of the same parish. We conclude that our case study data are only indicative of trends although the listing data are accurate for the limited areas studied.
