Abstract

Petroleum is one of most diverse and complex substances on Earth, containing countless organic molecules, mostly hydrocarbons including small amounts of heteroatom-containing hydrocarbons, and contaminated with various amounts of inorganic matter. It appears in many different forms, as gas, liquid and solid. The use of petroleum starts from prehistorical era and ancient civilized worlds. Modern petroleum industry is driven by the discovery of large gas and oil deposits for production and the ever-increasing demand in energy, fuels, chemicals and materials consumed in our daily life.
