Abstract

This paper presents a novel spindle speed variation (SSV) strategy with piecewise characteristics. Different from traditional sinusoidal spindle speed (SSS) varying continuously, the spindle speed considered in this paper changes in a sinusoidal way first and then returns to a constant value after the sinusoidal period. According to the work done by regenerative cutting forces, the chatter suppression mechanism via SSV is explained by four dynamic stages defined as chatter development, rapid suppression, transition stage, and dynamic balance. Besides, the influence of SSV on cutting power is considered innovatively to guide the parameters configuration and some new conclusions different from previous publications are drawn. Selecting a relatively small amplitude ratio of SSS and applying the SSV with piecewise characteristics are both helpful to reduce power fluctuation in turning process. Besides, the frequency of SSS determines the time consumed in the chatter development stage and is recommended to be relatively large within the allowable range of the machine tool. The SSV strategy studied in this paper should cooperate with chatter detection technology, which can provide an estimated chatter frequency for adjusting SSV parameters.
