Abstract
Is the world-wide anti-colonial revolution that characterised the twentieth century, a chapter in history that has been concluded once and for all? The countries who have a history of anti-colonial struggle try now to consolidate their economic and technological independence too, shortening the gap that separates them from more advanced countries. While on an international level the ‘great divergence’ that for centuries sealed Western rule over the rest of the world gets smaller, within the West itself the ‘great divergence’ that more and more sharply separates a privileged élite from the rest of the population gets larger. How will these two class struggles intertwine?
