The Namosyn project is researching the use of synthetic fuels and testing these in engines. The project will also develop new processes for producing e-fuels and concepts for their implementation.

The "Sustainable Mobility through Synthetic Fuels" consortium (Namosyn) includes universities, Fraunhofer Institutes, large-scale research institutes and industrial companies. The project, which is led by the Network for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (Dechema), aims to synthesise fuels for petrol and diesel engines, and to test them in practice.
The project will develop new processes for producing e-fuels. These will be tested in different blends for their combustion properties in engines under real and laboratory conditions. The engine tests will also include the compatibility of the engine, the seals and the fuel-carrying components with the new fuel. In the case of e-fuels for diesel engines, the question of possible retrofitting with components optimised for OME fuels is also being investigated.
Namosyn to do e-fuel research until 2022
In addition, concepts for implementation in existing systems are to be developed. Using a life-cycle analysis, the use of the synfuels will be evaluated for sustainability, environmental compatibility and the potential for CO2 reduction over the entire process chain. Namosyn was launched in 2019 and will be funded for three years by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
