A comparison reveals the deplorable state of affairs when it comes to qualifying semiconductors. Just as it is not possible for tires designed for a maximum speed of 160 km/h to later be qualified and approved for 250 km/h, this also applies in a similar way to some semiconductors which are designated for the consumer industry. Even though they are not specified for the automotive sector, they are still implemented in cars. Work groups from the ZVEI Robustness Validation Forum have now brought attention to this situation. The lack of robustness beyond the physical breakage strength limits of semiconductor materials also affects safety-related functions, as explained by the author in this article.
