Continental Water Storage Variations from GRACE Time-Variable Gravity Data

Abstract

Time-variable gravity fields from the GRACE satellite mission are a unique source of information to quantify spatio-temporal variations of total continental water storage for large areas. To make optimum use of these data for hydrological applications, specific processing strategies have to be applied in terms of data filtering, error budgeting, data combination and evaluation, and assimilation techniques for hydrological models. Methods developed in the project TIVAGAM are of general use for understanding and modelling dynamic processes in the Earth system.
