Abstract

A crack monitoring architecture, built on nodes that make use of low-cost plastic optical fiber (POF) sensors with wireless data transmission capability, is presented. The paper describes the realization of the monitoring system, which is particularly suited for applications in harsh environments or where the impossibility to ignite fires is a primary concern. By combining the low visual impact of optical fiber sensors with the extended coverage provided by the wireless connection between the measurement spots and the location of the control unit, the system is devised to yield remarkable advantages in preservation of large cultural heritage compounds. An example of installation in a famous monumental building is reported and the results obtained during the first months of in-situ operation, highlighting some critical aspects of the long–term stability, are also discussed.
