All engines installed at seagoing vessels with an output above 2.25 MW shall be equipped with crankcase monitoring systems. However, known solutions such as the detection of oil mist or bearing temperatures, splash oil and radar systems as monitoring systems for highly stressed con-rod bearings all have individual disadvantages. The aim of a joint project between Noris Automation and University of Applied Sciences Stralsund, HOST, was the development of a simple, reliable and economical monitoring system for moved bearing shells and its test in engine operation. …
