In what is perhaps his last work, one of America’s most esteemed historians, Pulitzer Prize winner David Hackett Fischer, takes on the role of Blacks in the founding of the USA in African Founders: How Enslaved People Expanded American Ideals. This volume serves as a companion to Fischer’s Albion’s Seed (1989), which examined the “four British folkways” that shaped the founding of the USA. African Founders reveals how much the historiography of early America has shifted focus in the last three decades, however, with a preeminent White historian moving from roughly 1000 pages of Albion to the same for African.
