As mentioned in Chapter 2, Ferdinand de SaussureDe Saussure, Ferdinand was a Swiss linguist known as one of the founding fathers of the field of semiotics. In one of his most important theories, de Saussure presented six dichotomies that describe the characteristics of signs and symbols. In this section we will discuss and provide examples for each of these six dichotomies.
