Abstract

To remove the traffic jam on the roads in Delhi, the metro rail was inducted by the Government. The limitation of previous studies reveals that the researchers did not address how to find out daily passenger-carrying costs, how the traveling time may be minimized, and satisfaction level of metro commuters can be increased. Against this backdrop, the objectives of this research work are (i) to estimate the passenger-carrying cost per day for the Redline Metro using the Physical System Theory (PST) model and Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) method, (ii) to get on the most desired schedule of Metro operation that optimizes the travel time and increases the satisfaction level of Delhi Metro riders. The research was administered with empirical data collected from Delhi Metro Railway Corporation. The passenger-carrying cost at each link of the redline metro was computed using the GARCH method and compared with the result obtained by the PST model. The extent of satisfaction of metro riders was found out and ranked by Garret's ranking technique. It has been found from the result that the passenger-carrying cost computed by the PST model and GARCH model is almost the same and either of these two methods may be used. Out of the two proposed schedules of metro operation, the most preferred schedule has been found by statistical analysis and presented in this paper. The Delhi metro rail authority may try the proposed schedules on a trial basis to optimize travel time and also to increase the satisfaction level of metro riders.
