Abstract

The Digital Twin (DT) is a concept introduced at the beginning of the twenty-first century but did not gain traction until the middle of the last decade. It is a concept that was first adopted for tangible industrial products and has since expanded to all manner of products and services. This includes not only application to inanimate entities but also to the biological conditions of people. Digital Twins are rapidly moving into the intangible realm of processes and abstract ideas. The Digital Twin consists of different types to be a framework for the entire lifecycle of the entities. While the Digital Twin today is a concept that is created by its users, the prediction is that its evolution is to be an intelligent platform. This will allow work to move from the physical world into the virtual world with major impacts on efficiency and effectiveness.

I actually knew the woman who was Miss Dig. My wife, Diane, worked for Michigan Bell, so we were at many of the same social events.

I am often asked, “So why didn’t you do your dissertation on Digital Twins?” The objective of the doctoral candidate is to get through the program to receive one’s degree. That means picking a dissertation research question that can be understood and approved by one’s doctoral committee. Brand new concepts are extremely difficult to meet those requirements.

EDS, which was owned by General Motors at that time, went through some corporate transitions and is now Siemens.

There are no lack of articles attempting to trace the Digital Twin back to the Apollo program. It is especially connected to Apollo 13, which might be the most amazing malfunction recovery story ever. I have had the privilege of meeting the Apollo 13 Commander, James Lovell, and hearing first-hand the amazing story of two astronauts sitting on what was basically a couch in Apollo 13, lining up the earth’s meridian vertically and horizontally perfectly on a reticule etched on Apollo 13’s window so that they didn’t burn up or bounce off into space at re-entry. However, the “twin” involved in working the problem on earth was a physical twin capsule simulator. It had very little “Digital Twin” about it. NASA KSC had the same GE 400 series mainframe, so I was asked to help occasionally. There was no digital twin capability.

The dispose phase is part of the product lifecycle, and I have discussed it in my PLM books. However, there just has not been much interest in exploring Digital Twin use cases. I will not mention the disposal phase further in this chapter.

In the early 70s, I worked on a General Motors feasibility project to determine if computers could handle geometric figures. We were successful in programming some rudimentary figures that may have even been 3D. However, it took an entire IBM 360/65 computer to do so. The 360/65 cost millions of dollars, so this wasn’t very feasible, except as a proof of future capabilities.
