While conventional powertrains continue to be optimised, legal frameworks are driving a clear trend towards plug-in hybrid drives. Schaeffler developed a plug-in hybrid concept based on a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the volume market, that is for front transverse applications in B and C segment passenger cars. Significant features of this PHEV-CVT are the parallel arrangement of the variator and a direct gear for the electric drive. The overall axial length of the CVT is only 390 mm due to a highly integrated electric motor. …
