Car maker Audi is firming up its plans to electrify its model range. Its strategy is to offer an electrified version for every model by 2025.

At its annual general meeting, Audi presented its strategy for handling the transition to electric vehicles. "We are continuing to react to the diesel crisis and are transforming large parts of our global organization for the future course that has been set," said Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board at Audi. The firm is putting major investments of around 40 billion euros into electric mobility, automated driving and digitisation.

The Ingolstadt-based car firm plans to achieve sales of around 800,000 electric cars and plug-in hybrids by the year 2025. By then, according to its "Roadmap E" strategy, there is to be an electrified version – either purely electric or hybrid – for every model in its range. First in line will be the Audi e-tron in autumn 2018, a purely electric SUV with a planned range of more than 400 kilometres in the WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure) driving cycle. At a rapid charging point with up to 150 kW, this car should regain its full range once more in just 30 minutes.

20 new, electrified Audi models

The second electric car will be the Audi e-tron Sportback in 2019, followed by the première of the Audi e-tron GT from Audi Sport a year later. Moreover, from 2020 Audi wants to offer an electric model in the compact class. The basis for more than 20 new, electrified models will be provided by the Modular Electric Drive Kit from the Volkswagen parent company, and the electric car platform that is being developed jointly with Porsche. "We didn't invent electric mobility ourselves, but we are now infusing it with our DNA," declares Stadler.

This transformation at Audi is also affecting the Digitisation business unit, which is to bring about greater added value. For its "Audi.Vorsprung.2025." strategy, Audi is developing an integrated IT platform for vehicle connectivity and digital services, which will also be compatible with other Volkswagen vehicles. "We want to offer premium electric cars and digital services that are financially attractive as well. This is our clear objective for the mobility of the future," says Alexander Seitz, board member for Finance, IT and Integrity at Audi.
