This swap system should allow the fully automatic replacement of batteries in a type of garage. The car maker is planning to set up 1,100 Power Swap Stations by 2020 and also to deploy more than 1,200 Power Mobile vehicles, which can deliver a range of around 100 kilometres after charging for ten minutes. The liquid-cooled 70-kWh battery pack consists of VDA-sized square cell batteries. These cells are designed for a 2,000-charge lifecycle and allow the ES8 to achieve a range of 355 kilometres based on the New European Driving Cycle.
With two electric motors both at the front and rear, the SUV delivers a total of 480 kilowatts (644 hp) of power and 840 newton meters of torque to all four wheels. Nio claims an acceleration of 4.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. Supplier Magna supplies the aluminium chassis of the ES8.

The driver assistance system "Nio Pilot" is in the first vehicle to use Mobileye’s eyeQ4 and has twenty-three sensors, one trifocal front-facing camera, four surround exterior cameras, five millimetre-wave radars, twelve ultrasonic sensors and one driver monitor camera. With a wheelbase of more than three metres, there should be no problems with space in the seven-seater SUV. The driver looks onto a digital instrument cluster in the cockpit. The ES8 features a voice-operated AI, called "Nomi", via the upright touchscreen on the centre console. The vehicle- and cloud-based assistance system controls the electric vehicle’s connectivity functions.
