BMW has announced the first technical details about its fuel-cell drive. The drive will offer a system performance of 275 kW and is due to come on the market in 2022 as a small series.

The BMW i Hydrogen Next is based on the BMW X5 and also integrates the electric drive of the soon-to-be-released BMW iX3. The FCEV's system performance will provide a total of 275 kW (374 HP). The fuel-cell system will contribute up to 125 kW (170 HP). The two 700-bar tanks together hold six kilograms of hydrogen, guaranteeing "a long range".

BMW is working together closely with Toyota to develop the fuel cell technology. The fuel cells emerged as the result of this collaboration with the Japanese manufacturer, and the fuel cell stack and the overall system were developed by BMW. The i Hydrogen Next will initially be manufactured only in small series. BMW wants to hold back on introducing FCEV vehicles until refuelling infrastructure and sustainably produced hydrogen become more widely available.
