Abstract

Changes in the interaction strength between functionalized perfluoropolyether lubricants and amorphous carbon surfaces, as measured by the fraction of lubricant remaining on the surface after a solvent rinse, are shown to be likely a result of adsorption/desorption of at least two foreign background gas-phase species. These co-adsorbed species have important implications for changes in head–disk interface tribology over time in disk drive magnetic storage devices.
