Abstract

When the armies at last stood down, the mineral industries and Virginia and Tennessee Railroad in western Virginia, all damaged yet none completely destroyed, faced uncertain futures. The years immediately after peace came were difficult, but eventually capital flowed in from Northern and foreign financiers, particularly British. With the fresh funding, most of the operations revived to become key elements in rebuilding the post-war economy. By the 1880s, southwestern Virginia’s iron and coal production boomed as the railroad network, chief carrier of this mineral wealth, underwent significant expansion. Even though limited salt manufacture continued at Saltville and better days lay ahead, the prodigious Civil War output of 10,000 bushels a day was never reached again. Salt making ceased altogether in 1896, replaced by a prosperous salt byproducts industry. At Austinville, zinc processing ultimately outstripped lead in the late 1800s, and the mines turned out metal for another century.
