“HiTech” devices, which permeate our life, carry out an infinite number of operations thanks to the information stored inside. The memory contained in these devices, like the memory of human beings, is neither infallible nor eternal. We all live with these devices, accepting the risk that, every now and then, they might fail. It is up to electronic systems designers to evaluate, for every specific application, an “acceptable” error probability. The acceptable error probability in the control unit of an automobile engine or of the car’s ABS is, for obvious reasons, very different from the acceptable error probability for the memory of a video game; and the impact of this reliability on the cost of the device is surely different.
