8. Estimation of Landfill Methane Generation from Solid Waste Management Options in the Galapagos Islands

Abstract

The significant increase in population in the Galapagos Islands has resulted in a commensurate increase in solid waste generation. Different waste management options generate different amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG). Land filling is the most common final disposal method for solid waste. However, depending on the content of the waste materials, this method produces varying amounts of GHG. Waste recycling can reduce land filling and organic waste can be composted for local reuse. Two options for waste and methane management are examined for Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, and Isabela Islands based on available data. Results suggest energy generation from methane is not viable due to small volumes and technology restrictions over a fifteen year time period. However, the potential for reuse of composted organic material shows promise.
