Failure Analysis of Steady Clamps Used in Electrified Railway

Abstract

In this study, cracks were detected in two steady clamps made of CuNi2Si alloy after approximately 6 months of service in an electrified railway system. Efforts were made to analyze the failure of the steady clamps using both experimental and finite-element (FE) methods. Microfractography revealed the brittle nature of the fracture. No microstructural degradation was found in the failed material. Extensive flake oxides were observed in the fracture. The investigation results suggest that the root cause of the failure was overlap defect which occurred in the forging process. The association of precracks induced by overlap defect with bolt preload resulted in premature failure.
