Abstract

“Frammenti” was released in 2009 and it was Italy’s first Alternate Reality Game. It consisted of a television series and an online game of solving enigmas collaboratively. The development of the project is here retraced basing on interviews lead with its director, screenwriter, game designer. Since the budget was limited, production had to get creative and resourceful in the way they strengthened the emergent narrative by getting involved in first person with the players, both in the virtual and real world.

One academic paper about “Frammenti” was published in 2014 and then again in 2016 [1, 2]. In addition, in 2017 a MA thesis analysing the role of video games in learning included “Frammenti” as a case study [3].

At the time of “Frammenti”’s production, Di Paola and Marino were working for Shado, and Salvadori was working for Log607.

The previous year Log607 had created the Whai Whai city guides, unconventional city guides which had users walk around the city to solve a series of puzzle and unlock the episodes of a story. Both startups were “growing” in H-Farm, an innovative hub located in Roncade, Italy.

The community forum is no longer available, but “the Activists” created a Wiki dedicated to “Frammenti” where, in addition to detailed information on each episode, they also provide useful insights on how they collectively solved the enigmas. Despite being presented as an ARG, “Frammenti” can also be considered an example of Transmedia Storytelling. It includes all four elements of the Transmedia Radar (Pratten, 2001: 52): Story, Experience in the real-world, Participation of the audience, Gaming.

When the players researched the owners of some fake websites created specifically for the ARG, they discovered the name of Log607 and started monitoring all the output Log607 would produce (some of it not at all related to the series).
