Current legislation on CO2 emissions is encouraging the use of electric vehicles and also increasing the pressure on developers of combustion engines to reduce fuel consumption even further and bring gasoline engines down to the same level as diesels. Exhaust gas turbocharging plays an important role in this respect. Turbochargers were originally used in large engines and have been introduced in recent decades into diesel engines, first in trucks and then in cars, where they have become well-established.
